TAFL Ancient Board Games of the Norse and Celtic Peoples of Scandinavia and the British Isles Ancient Games Book 1 eBook Jesse Robinson

If you are a fan of ancient games, you need this book. Tafl is a series of board games developed by people the Vikings had contact with during the Viking Era. They didn't always raid. Sometimes they would set up trading posts or even settle down and developed relations with the locals. The Scots, Welsh, Irish, Saxons, and Sami (Lapland) all developed their version of the Viking game, hnefatafl. These Tafl games were very popular in the Middle Ages until Chess was introduced in the 12th century. Jesse Robinson has done an excellent job of explaining the history, reconstruction, and rules of 11 variations of this board game. He is good at explaining that, because they are reconstructions, there are a number of variations and disagreements on how the game was played. It's an unusual game. It is asymmetrical. Instead of 2 equal sides squaring off to fight for a goal, this game is between 2 unequal sides with different goals. It is based on the siege, where a small group of defenders protect their king from a larger group of attackers. I have found it to be vary addictive.

TAFL Ancient Board Games of the Norse and Celtic Peoples of Scandinavia and the British Isles Ancient Games Book 1 eBook Jesse Robinson Reviews

Good
This book has several varieties of table games and their histories with variations on the games so that you can play the same things the Vikings or Celts did. Can't wait to build the boards.
This is a great little book. It covers the game and most variants. A must have book!
This book is easy to read and easy to understand!
This book was very easy to read with great instructions (especially for beginners like me) on the various techniques used in different areas of the ancient world. I look forward to playing tafl and reviving the tradition!
Very fast read. Due to its nature of addressing variations, it gets a bit repetitive but is very informational in terms of extant examples of rule sets. Not a strategy guide to be clear, this books doesn't try to make many claims beyond what can be supported with archeological evidence.
This is a short book about the TAFL game and variants. The rules are great and the short history is interesting but way to short.
The editing though is far from great. Lots of repetition that could have easily been cut or merged together.
